Whoopi Goldberg isn't too bothered about Beyoncé never winning album of the year.
The comedian and talk show host weighed in Monday morning on "The View" after Jay-Z criticized the Recording Academy during Sunday night's Grammys for never awarding his wife with an album of the year award, despite multiple nominations ("I Am… Sasha Fierce," "Beyoncé," "Lemonade" and "Renaissance").
"Well, she's got (32 Grammys). So I kind of appreciate all of that. And they're not for just one thing. So for me, it doesn’t matter if they give her" the album of the year award, Goldberg told her co-hosts. "It's subjective. People are voting. You can't determine who's doing it, unless you're the person voting."
She added, "So I think (32) is kind of not a terrible number!"
Whoopi Goldberg calls Beyoncé, Taylor Swift 'superhuman women'
During his acceptance speech for the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, Jay-Z – joined on stage by 12-year-old daughter Blue Ivy – addressed Grammy voters, saying, "We love y'all. We want y'all to get it right. At least get it close to right."
As Beyoncé was seated right in front of center stage, he continued, "I don't want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than anyone and never won album of the year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn't work."
When she won the Grammy for best electronic/dance album at last year's ceremony, Beyoncé made history by bringing her total trophy count to 32. In 2021, she became the most-winning female artist in Grammys history.
Step up? Done.Women dominate all aspects of the Grammys this year
Goldberg, a one-time Grammy winner for best comedy recording with "Whoopi Goldberg: Direct from Broadway," praised the fact that so many female artists got their flowers during the 66th annual Grammy Awards, which saw all nine televised awards go to women.
"Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, they are these superhuman women who do this extraordinary thing. So I’m not mad at anybody for anything that’s happening because we’re taking these women; we’re not hiding them. We’re saying, 'Here’s what women are doing,'" she said. "So I’m grateful. I know what it takes to do what you got to do."
"Thirty-two Grammys, where does she keep 'em?" Goldberg went on to joke. "Where do you keep 'em, Bey?"
