A husband shot his wife outside a southern Kansas elementary school Monday after dropping their two children off for class, police say.
The domestic shooting occurred at around 9:15 a.m. local time in front of the Cessna Elementary School in Wichita, Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said a news conference. Police did not release the names of the suspect or the victim.
Witnesses said the woman sustained a gunshot in the chest before running toward the school for help, according to Easter.
When a deputy arrived at the scene, the suspect pointed a gun at the victims head, Easter said. After taking cover, the deputy then shot and arrested the suspect.
"There was a small fight that took place between the deputy and the suspect, and he got him into custody," Easter said. "At this point, there's not been any type of school shooting. There's not been any kids that are hurt or in danger or anything like that."
Couple took Lyft ride to school
A Lyft driver dropped off the couple at the elementary school before the shooting, according to Easter. Officials have interviewed the driver and other witnesses at the scene.
Both the suspect and the victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment, Easter added.
The school was placed on lockdown during the incident, though Easter said no students, teachers or staff were injured.
"There was no school shooting whatsoever. Unfortunately, sometimes these things manifest around neighborhoods where there's schools," Easter said. "I know for parents it can be scary but the fact of the matter is, law enforcement showed up within two minutes of the shooting coming out and it never got into the school itself."
USA TODAY has reached out to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office for additional information.
